Human Trafficking

Trafficking, which is often considered as a modern form of slavery, consists mostly of the exploitation of people in various sectors. Both sexual exploitation (mostly as part of prostitution) as well as economic exploitation (through labour) is concerned. By smuggling of human beings we mean profiting from the help which is given to foreigners in their illegal immigration

The human-trafficking departments mandate is written in the Act of 13.04.1995 which pertains to the trade in human beings and child pornography and in the Royal Decree of 16.06.1995. Following the Royal Decree, the Minister of justice presides over an interdepartmental co-ordination unit to fight trafficking in human beings. This unit assembles all ministerial departments and services involved in this area.

Every year the department draws up an independent public evaluation report describing the developments and results in the fight against international trade in human beings. The department also coordinates three specialised reception centres for trafficking-victims.
