Discrimination Grounds

Racial discrimination

The Centre performs numerous activities in terms of the protected criteria stipulated in the law against racism:

  • Processing reports on racism and xenophobia,
  • Information, raising awareness and education,
  • Conducting studies,
  • Writing suggestions and recommendations.

Faith or personal beliefs

The Centre understands “faith or personal beliefs” to be the belief related to the matter of the existence or otherwise of a God/supreme being. Personal beliefs such as atheism, agnosticism or freethinking are also included here.

Disability

The Anti-Discrimination Law of 10 May 2007 does not stipulate a definition for the term “disability”. The Centre provides a comprehensive specification of this term:

– Physical and sensory health problems;
– Chronic and degenerative diseases;
– Genetic diseases;
– Mental or intellectual limitations;
– Physical or mental restrictions as a result of a work accident, an occupational illness;
– Etc.

Age

Discrimination based on age, occurs frequently in job advertisements. Therefore the Centre has developed a tool that enables you to assess if your job advertisement contains possible discriminative phrasing. Furthermore in this section we also deal with specific challenges for aging persons of foreign origin.

Sexual orientation

We make the disctinction between three types of “sexual orientation”: heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality.

You do not choose your sexual orientation yourself ,it is decided by the gender of the person(s) you feel attracted to and for whom you develop affection, both emotionally and physically.

Other

The Centre will also intervene in cases that are based on the following grounds: civil status, birth, wealth, political belief, current or future health condition, a physical or genetic characteristic and social origin.
